Do you want to discover hidden dimensions of your voice, of yourself and of the physical vibrations that surround you and shape you? Does music touch you deeply, and do you wish your own voice could touch deeply too? Do you believe that music and sound are somehow powerful tools for transformation, and that you should know more about it?
Then join R E S O N A N C E and discover the hidden dimensions of your voice!
R e s o n a n c e ?
When you shout a tone into a piano, many strings stretched on the soundboard inside the piano will start to resonate with your voice, creating an echo-like effect. When you beat a drum near your body, you can sometimes feel its pulse in your bones. When you train yourself, you can perceive many more subtle effects of vibrations. In general, when one body picks up the vibrations of another body in motion, we call it resonance.
The title of this course — R e s o n a n c e — refers to such interactions of sounds and other vibrations. R e s o n a n c e teaches you to better use and understand the power of your voice and ears, to be more sensitive to sound and resonance. As a human being, your voice and your own hearing of your voice already comprises a feedback loop, but one that very few people use in a conscious way. With R e s o n a n c e you will learn to tap into the hidden potential of making sounds (speaking, chanting, singing), listening to sound and ultimately, becoming senstive to your deeper ‘inner voice’.
To allow the many sounds (inside and outside) to resonate with each other in a more balance way takes time, because in our rushed world we want to do too much all the time. R e s o n a n c e is an invitation not to force yourself to ‘master’ or control something, but to step back, to open up the doors of perception, and to hear and see what’s there. Therefore this course invites you to give yourself ten months time to incorporate new ways of practising with your voice, to absorb new ideas and understand the paramount role of sound in a world that bombards us with images and distractions. After each sessions you have about four weeks to practise, read and make new observations. Students are encouraged to set up a physical or virtual reading/singing group to deepen their experience and exchange knowledge.
Overtone singing
The backbone of this training program is the overtone singing technique. You will deeply immerse yourself in the fundamentals of musical sound, the harmonics that our voices and ears know well but our mind knows not. You will acquire expert knowledge and skills about the resonance of your voices from a technical point of view, using a variety of means from exercises to powerpoint presentations and audio-software. Not in the abstract, but in an experiential and personalised way. These specific instructions will be enhanced by methods to learn to express yourself better emotionally and freely, using the full range and colours of your voice. Parallel to this you will be informed about ‘ecologies’ of sound and music. In other words, ancient and modern sound practices around the world that can help you to have a healthier way of life and a more musical way of being.
