Breath-performance @ Red Room Aside

Tonight I am going to do a short ‘breath performance’ at a special edition of Red Room, the monthly event in the Aveda kitchen hosted by Chu Ping and Roma and Manav Mehta. The breath is a central focus of my performances, sometimes in the foreground, always in the background. And I thought the news of the passing away, on August 20 2014, of Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (or simply ‘B.K.S.’) Iyengar would be a fitting occasion to start and end the performance using special breathing techniques.

Aside 6 Invite

Iyengar was instrumental in bringing yoga to the west in the 1950s and began to adapt it to the different lifestyles of American practitioners. Though he received criticism for changing the one-to-one transmission to a group practice and using physical tools such as woodblocks and straps, there can be no doubt that his methods have been a great success and have benefited hundreds of thousands of people in the West. And one can certainly not say that he himself was not fully part of the tradition, as an early video of him with is his own guru Tirumalai Krishnamacharya demonstrated. This is the full version of the 1938 film, but you can find several shorter sequences on Youtube.

It was Tirumalai Krishnamacharya who traveled India to promote hatha yoga and its associated practices and philosophies and thus began the revival which then crossed over to other parts of the world.

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya shortly before his death in 1988, aged 100

One may certainly include me in the league of teachers who misinterpret yoga or use its name for purposes other than its original intentions. But I do not agree with those criticasters who deplore what Iyengar has done. I think yoga is a fantastic practice and profound philosophy that can benefit people in many different ways. Indians should be proud to see so many people around the world doing some form of yoga or yoga-derived practices today.

I am very often in favor of traditional practices above modern forms myself, for example when it comes to indigenous music. But the modernisation and adaption process is irreversible and in the case of yoga, even those not-so-dedicated practitioners like myself learn things and solve problems that you can not learn otherwise (I struggled with lower-backache for many years; physiotherapies did not solve it but hatha yoga did).

So to thank and honour Mr. Iyengar I will begin tonight’s performance with a very extended, silent inhale and finish with a very extended, resounding exhale.

If you are curious, read more about Iyengar in the Washington Post and on The Atlantic.

VOICE YOGA

In this class we use the voice in its immense richness, not only as a musical instrument, but as our primary tool to communicate and exist through/with/for/from sound. In Voice Yoga, sound, silence and resonance become a mirror for the self. The sounds produced by ourselves,  allows us to ‘see’ ourselves more clearly, to hear what’s living deep inside us. In ever-growing cycles of creating and perceiving we learn about music and sound, about ourselves and about the environment. A ‘quintessence of science, sound and self’ as I  called it in my book Overtone Singing.

Do you want to discover hidden dimensions of your voice, of yourself and of the physical vibrations that surround you and shape you? Does music touch you deeply, and do you wish your own voice could touch deeply too? Do you believe that music and sound are somehow powerful tools for transformation, and that you should know more about it?

Then join R E S O N A N C E   and discover the hidden dimensions of your voice!

R e s o n a n c e ?

When you shout a tone into a piano, many strings stretched on the soundboard inside the piano will start to resonate with your voice, creating an echo-like effect. When you beat a drum near your body, you can sometimes feel its pulse in your bones. When you train yourself, you can perceive many more subtle effects of vibrations. In general, when one body picks up the vibrations of another body in motion, we call it resonance.

The title of this course — R e s o n a n c e — refers to such interactions of sounds and other vibrations.   R e s o n a n c e   teaches you to better use and understand the power of your voice and ears, to be more sensitive to sound and resonance. As a human being, your voice and your own hearing of your voice already comprises a feedback loop, but one that very few people use in a conscious way. With   R e s o n a n c e   you will learn to tap into the hidden potential of making sounds (speaking, chanting, singing), listening to sound and ultimately, becoming senstive to your deeper ‘inner voice’.

To allow the many sounds (inside and outside) to resonate with each other in a more balance way takes time, because in our rushed world we want to do too much all the time. R e s o n a n c e   is an invitation not to force yourself to ‘master’ or control something, but to step back, to open up the doors of perception, and to hear and see what’s there. Therefore this course invites you to give yourself ten months time to incorporate new ways of practising with your voice, to absorb new ideas and understand the paramount role of sound in a world that bombards us with images and distractions. After each sessions you have about four weeks to practise, read and make new observations. Students are encouraged to set up a physical or virtual reading/singing group to deepen their experience and exchange knowledge.

Overtone singing

The backbone of this training program is the overtone singing technique. You will deeply immerse yourself in the fundamentals of musical sound, the harmonics that our voices and ears know well but our mind knows not. You will acquire expert knowledge and skills about the resonance of your voices from a technical point of view, using a variety of means from exercises to powerpoint presentations and audio-software. Not in the abstract, but in an experiential and personalised way. These specific instructions will be enhanced by methods to learn to express yourself better emotionally and freely, using the full range and colours of your voice. Parallel to this you will be informed about ‘ecologies’ of sound and music. In other words, ancient and modern sound practices around the world that can help you to have a healthier way of life and a more musical way of being.

Hong Kong overtone singing workshop

Hong Kong Vertical Horizon by RJL

Hong Kong Vertical Horizon by RJL

Next month, on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September, I’ll be in Hong Kong to teach a workshop of overtone singing. We will work with themes such as breathing, resonance, vowels, sound meditation, healing potential of the voice, and of course overtone singing techniques. In other words, a fine, balanced combination of factual knowledge about vibration and sound as an energy tool and exercises and meditations to develop your senses and connect deeper with your entire being through sound.

On Day 1 we forget everyting we know about sound and voice and  make a fresh start. Surprisingly, by doing less than we normally do, we notice more – and begin to know more. We return to a primary knowledge at the centre of the body-mind. You explore the hidden dimensions of your  voice through new techniques of hearing, sounding and singing.

Mark vocalising to Hans de Back's gong playing, June 2014

Mark vocalising to Hans de Back’s gong playing, June 2014

On Day 2  we continue to connect deeper and wider with the sounding  body within. We explore more techniques to sing overtones and can begin to hear them in our own mouths. By losing control of the voice, we find new paths of sound, which also means new paths of the self – a therapeutic experience. Experiencing yourself and others as musical human beings, you encounter new possibilities, new barriers, new connections …. Like Day 1, we end with a Q& A and a guided group improvisation.

More information and prices can be found on the blog of my Hong Kong host Jasmine Hui.
