Two Hong Kong workshops (May 1/2 & 3/4)

Read more in Chinese.

Next month, from May 1 to May 4 2015, I’ll be in Hong Kong to teach two workshops of overtone singing and body-voice-mind practise. We will work with themes such as breathing, resonance, vowels, sound meditation, healing potential of the voice, and of course overtone singing techniques. These short but powerful workshops are a balanced combination of factual knowledge about vibration and sound as an energy tool and exercises and meditations to develop your senses and connect deeper with your entire being through sound.

There are two subsequent 2-day courses. Those who have done Beginner I in  2014 or who do it now, can do the Beginner II course.

BEGINNER I -Overtone Singing, To Find Your Inner Voice
On Day 1 we forget everyting we know about sound and voice and  make a fresh start. Surprisingly, by doing less than we normally do, we notice more – and begin to know more. We return to a primary knowledge at the centre of the body-mind. You explore the hidden dimensions of your  voice through new techniques of hearing, sounding and singing.

On Day 2  we continue to connect deeper and wider with the sounding  body within. We explore more techniques to sing overtones and can begin to hear them in our own mouths. By losing control of the voice, we find new paths of sound, which also means new paths of the self – a therapeutic experience. Experiencing yourself and others as musical human beings, you encounter new possibilities, new barriers, new connections. Like Day 1, we end with a Q& A and a guided group improvisation.

BEGINNER II – Body, Mind and Beyond

As in Group I, we warm-up with Voice Yoga exercises. We summarise and refresh what we have learned before. We delve deeper into resonance and harmonics as tools for healing and therapy, both for yourself and others. We also explore other ways of sound/noise-making, navigating between comfort and discomfort. We return to what you want or need to express in a comfortable way, supported by each others’ voices.

On day 2  we talk about and practise sounds and music from spiritual traditions, focusing on older Christian forms and new 20th/21st century practices. We will do more structured choral/group singing, with and without overtones. We gain a deeper sense of the power of sound as a force transcending our limited individual sphere. We finish again with a guided improvisation where the unique qualities of each voice can emerge. Those who have a copy of my book may prepare themselves by re-reading the chapter Body, Mind and Beyond.

About Voice Yoga

VoiceYoga3What is Voice Yoga?

Voice Yoga consists of a series of exercises that gives pride of place to the voice as a central, creative force in our lifes. Our existence depends in important ways on our speaking, listening, sounding and singing abilities. The class promotes awareness of the many roles of the voice in our daily lives. It expands our creative vocabulary, without necessarily talking about music, the singing voice or any musical style. The point is not so much to learn any specific new technique: we play with the voice in a lot of different ways and listen with fresh ears to the hidden potential of our voices.

In Voice Yoga, sound, silence and resonance become a mirror for the self. The sounds produced by ourselves,  allows us to ‘see’ ourselves more clearly, to hear what’s living deep inside us. In ever-growing cycles of creating and perceiving we learn about music and sound, about ourselves and about the environment.

Structure of the classes

We usually start with silence, breath and body movements to turn away from our busy mind into the body and to the sensations we actually experience. We let the voice come out of a natural breath flow. We listen to and follow its natural resonances. We do not try to sing in an artful way, but to experience how body-mind-voice are intimately connected, and how voice and resonance can serve as a bridge to overcome the dualistic notion of body <> mind. From then on, all kinds of styles and genres of vocalising and musicking may happen, some structured, some wild, some giving insight in your voice, some therapeutic. Exercises are based on yoga, musical and theatrical techniques, vipassana meditation and our innate love to play like children.

The idea behind Voice Yoga is comparable to yoga and tai-chi: the effect of the exercises is gradual. We believe that only with repeated classes you can really learn to connect the energies of voice & sound with the whole of your body and mind. You slowly become more and more familiar with your voice and its powers; you will begin to hear and feel things you did not hear and feel before. That’s why we suggest you to sign up for four classes a time after your trial class.

The teacher

Voice Yoga is designed and taught by Mark van Tongeren, who brings with him 25 years of experience in working with sound, music and theatre and many different cultures.

https://fusica.wordpress.com/2014/12/30/voice-yoga-2014-re-view/

For whom
For those seeking to enrich their voices, let off steam and unlock their hidden creative potential. For singers and those who are afraid to sing. For actors, musicians and other artists and professionals who work with sound. Perhaps more than anyone else, people who want to experience and learn about the therapeutical effects of sound seem to benefit from Voice Yoga. The human voice is a tool that assists human beings to produce a mirror-like reflection of the world around them in their minds. By gaining a deeper understanding and experience of the mechanisms of making sounds, words and music, and of listening, we gradually deepen the connections within ourselves (our body-minds) and with others and the world around us.

Voice Yoga 2014 Re-view

Westerpark snow

2014 was a great year for the Voice Yoga class. Some old students came back, and many new enthusiastic students joined for a first time, some of them also coming back.

The outline of the formula was the same: start with silence, breath and ‘body-work’ (which is always also mind-work). Then a first  exploration of our unused potential to make sound, with simple, and sometimes primitive, raw sounds and movements. Then a structured part with more warming-up of ‘body-speech-mind’ (to use the Buddhist three-fold scheme of the human being), thevowel triadand the ‘ocean exercise’. Depending on the particular dynamic of the day (and the duration of the preceding parts), I add two or three of a large pool of rotating exercises that let us listen, feel and (re)sound in different ways. In the end, I often sing with the sruti-box, and students lie down on the mats in the Canjune Training Center.

Some of the new students of this year got really hooked on our weekly session, saying they missed it a lot when I was travelling, for example. Every student’s input changes the way things turn out, and the recent sessions have become true adventures of body, mind and sound. One time, right after a particularly powerful session of vocal noises, chants, screams, rhythms, I asked each student what (s)he had just experienced. I had decided not to interrupt the sound-making, and it had lasted longer than ever, about 45 minutes without a break. It was amazing to hear their deeply personal, moving accounts. Every student had gone  through powerful experiences. One re-lived her pain from the past by letting the sounds follow the beating of her foot, which felt like a great relief. Another mainly listened, which worried me a little; but she was extremely grateful to what she heard and was crying at some point. A therapist told us she used her lessons from Voice Yoga to help others relief their pain, by adding sounds to the massage treatment and inviting her client to make sounds too. Another could hardly find the words to describe her feelings, but said she felt completely enveloped by the other voices and also merged them, while singing or just listening. One student’s first response, after we had just stopped our sound-making, was: ‘Ahh, this is better than sex!’

I usually try to limit my own talking and do not ask students to talk about their experience either. So I was amazed to learn about their feelings and impressions, and felt encouraged to develop this path further. I thank all those who have attended the Voice Yoga class in the last two years, whether it is one or ten or twenty times, for their courage, their input, their creativity. This class is so interesting because of you all! And I thank Canjune for the wonderful and inspiring space, which was renovated early 2014.

How to survive hospitalisation?

I posted this on Facebook but thought it was worthwhile for the blog too.

Mark@Hosp
I / fate decided to have an alternative birthday celebration event: a visit to the hospital! An enduring problem with a certain outgrowth of my body (I’ll spare you the details) needed treatment. So my first hospitalisation happened to take place on my 45th birthday. An extraordinary gift, of course! I took it has a holiday (about two days off duty), but it wasn’t a vacation without pain of course. Fortunately I was well taken care off by the nurses, doctor and my dear wife.

As always, I paid attention to the sounds. First in the operation room. A deadly silence it wasn’t. I heard many Chinese voices, making jokes, talking busily, one conversation in that corner of my ear (and eye) and another behind me, invisible, or even three simultaneous, animated conversations that I could hardly understand or not at all. Perhaps it’s better that way… My limited sight did not prevent me to eye a short piece of translucent tube which stuck out above the sheets and towels covering me (in the operation room it was freezing about 5 degrees I estimate). After a while parts of my body and blood were started to be washed away through the tube 10 centimeters away from my eyes, giving me some kind of indication of the goings on.

Back in my room, many hours were spent lying flat. I could not move my head unless I wanted to have a really bad headache, that special one you get from a spinal injection  – no thanks. So what do you do? You listen. In my case, most of all to myself. Particularly during the dark hours when the anaesthesia stopped working, humming to myself at different pitches helped me to give a more positive focus on painful and other parts of the body. I have been doing this for twenty-five years, in good and bad times, and it remains a very interesting, comforting and highly effective experience to massage yourself inside out. Using different vowels and harmonics you can also give yourself a pleasant brain/skull massage.

Even better were the rhythmic jazzy bass lines I am practising with my voice: moderate to high speed, low pitched, melodic staccato pulses with mouth closed; jumping from place to place through the body’s organs and awakening motoric senses that are not stimulated otherwise. Each tone of these basslines reverberates at a specific spot along the skeleton (through a process called bone conduction) so that I am really ‘punching’ my body from left to right and high to low. At the same time, this is a great exercise for an upcoming gig at the Oorsprong Curator Series in Amsterdam that I am very excited about (I’ll play with Mark Alban Lotz and Bram Stadhouders, Monday 18 November, details t.b.a.).

We did not forget about distraction number one: the TV. I rarely watch TV, and now I did not watch at all. I just overheard the films while June was watching. What you may notice already when you pay attention carefully to the sound while watching a movie, becomes all the more striking when you don’t see a thing. The abrupt reduction of the volume of the soundtrack when voices come in, and its reappearance when the voices stop – even for a short moment. The result is like a drunk DJ playing a senseless game with his faders to annoy his audience. I pity the composer who creates some of his best melodies and finds it cut up into more or less random blurps erupting out from speech – but no, most composers who earn a living with film scoring keep their most inspiring ideas for other occasions, thus accepting a much smaller audience for the stuff they put their soul into. And a good movie director will let the composer have his way to score the film after the final edits.

I almost forget to mention the majestic tree, hidden from outside view on three sides by the 5-story hospital. The walls form a narrow, echoing bulwark where hundreds, no, I think more than a thousand birds retreat for the night. At 16 o’ clock they come and sit on the edges of the roof, at 17 the gigantic tree is shaking when the birds start taking their seats with happy twittering, and by dusk the swarm produces a screeching, ehmmm, noise.

Lastly, I took to my headphones to listen to a fascinating Coursera course (History of Humankind by professor Harari from Hebrew University in Jeruzalem, highly recommended and you can still join!). For falling asleep, having to endure increasing pain and uneasiness, I listened to incredible stories that Michael Vetter told me some years ago. And that’s where the hospital-sound journey of my birthday ended: I fell asleep!

Thanks for listening!

Voice of Dao news

Last week my new Voice of Dao class took off in a festive mood and with enthusiastic responses. This week was the second time students came to try out this new vocal practice, which is open to anyone, and can be joined anytime. Voice of Dao consists of a series of exercises that gives pride of place to the voice as a central, creative force in our existence as speaking, listening, sounding and singing human beings. It promotes awareness of the many roles of the voice in our daily lives. It expands our creative vocabulary, without necessarily talking about music, the singing voice or any musical style. The point is not so much to learn any specific new technique, but to listen with fresh ears to the hidden potential of your voice. Taken together, Voice of Dao is a practice that lets your voice, ears and awareness tap into the abundant sources of creative imagination, which lies at the root of human existence.

Now, the news:

After two classes it became clear that one hour of exercises and 15 minutes of rest is too short, and so from next week on the class will be from 10 till 12, every Monday morning.

Until Chinese New Year the dates are:

Monday December 24

December 31 no class

Monday January 7

Monday January 14

Monday January 21

Monday January 28 to be confirmed

Monday February 4

On Saturday February 2 we are considering having a one-day workshop Overtone Singing again.

Feel free to join the Voice of Dao class any time. The idea behind Voice of Dao is comparable to yoga and tai-chi: the effect of the exercises is gradual. We believe that only with repeated classes you can really learn to connect the energies of voice & sound with the whole of your body and mind. That’s why we ask you to sign up for four classes a time after your trial class.

The price for the new, longer format of the class is 400 NT$ for the first class. After that, you sign up for four classes a time, paying 375 NT$ per class, that is, 1500 NT$ at once. You do not have to attend four classes in a row; we’ll just tick off your presence four times and then you can sign up again for four times.

Please go to Hans & Una’s blog to get the details and sign up.

Starting December 10: weekly Voice of Dao classes

I am happy to announce that from December onwards you can join a weekly session based on my 25 years of working with the voice. I call it Voice of Dao.

Here is the idea, in English and Chinese.

(You can also find this information and more in

Chinese-only on http://hansuna.blogspot.tw/)

DESCRIPTION OF VOICE OF DAO /

What is ‘Voice of Dao’?

In the Voice of Dao exercises, sound is used as a powerful tool to experience the present, to live (in) it, and to transcend commonly perceived dichotomies (like mind and body; I and other). There are no technical requirements for these simple exercises: anyone can join anytime. The four starting points are familiar to everyone, but few people use these resources to the full. They are

1) breath

2) resonance/harmonics

3) focused attention

4) silence

What will I learn?

You will learn how to let these four elements help you achieve a deeper sense of self. Like tai-chi or yoga, the benefit of the exercises is gradual. By repeating exercises time and again, their ‘resonance’ builds up and slowly penetrates deeper through the surface layers of the self.

What are the benefits of this practice?

Voice of Dao may have a number of effects. You will experience and learn to use new aspects of your voice, which is your primary tool for communication. By extension, you will experience yourself more as sound – even as music. By tapping into creative undercurrents of being human (be they of a ‘rhythmic’, a ‘resonant’ or even a silent nature), fixed perceptions about the self, the world and about music and sound loosen up. This process enables new feelings, thoughts, ideas and connections to appear and to grow.

What does it cost?

After an introductory class, you can write-up for four sessions each time. An  introductory  is 400 NT$ and can be paid in cash. Then you can decide to register for four classes a time, and pay NT$ 1500 when you come for the first of four classes. You may skip classes and spread your attendance over a longer period. Classes will sometimes be interrupted when Mark travels abroad, which will be announced to the mailinlist of the participants.

To register send an email to Una Kao: unakao@yahoo.com.tw.

Where and when?

Sessions are held first at the training Centre of Can June or in the concert stage/theatre of Daan park. Starting time is 10 o’ clock and the class is finished at 12 o’ clock.

The first session was held on Monday December 10, 2012. Check the latest post for the latest dates.

Please let us know if you would like to come, but are not available on monday mornings, and tell us your preferred dates. Send an email to Mark van Tongeren (mark@fusica.nl) or Una Kao (unakao@yahoo.com.tw).

Here at the blog of Hans and Una, you can find details and more in Chinese.

Do I learn overtone singing?

This practice is beneficial if you want to learn overtone singing, but it is not the place to receive direct instructions in this vocal technique. Please refer to the Overtone Singing workshops for more information on learning to sing overtones.

And who is the teacher?

For twenty-five years Mark van Tongeren has studied music, sound and voice, constantly seeking to enrich his activities as a performer with fresh insights from academic research, and vice versa. He travelled extensively in Siberia and Europe studying vocal sound and music with a variety of teachers, most notably Tuvan throat singers and the German musician and zen-teacher Michael Vetter. He worked many years with Silo Theater, is part of the seven-piece collective for musical improvisation Oorbeek, and most recently founded the vocal laboratory Paraphonia, with Rollin Rachele and others. He holds an MA in ethnomusicology (University of Amsterdam) and expects to receive a PhD in practice-based artistic research in 2013 (at University of Leiden). His methods for Voice of Dao are derived from music and theatre training techniques, chanting, singing and improvisation from many traditions, Buddhist meditation, music therapies, yoga and so on. They are informed by in-depth studies of disciplines like acoustics, science of sound and the singing voice, music anthropology, musicology and so on.
